I'm mostly up in time for a train into the city, to collect my hire car for the next few days. Despite plumping for a slightly higher engined model, the motor is surprisingly gutless when faced with the gradients of State Highway 1 up to Whangarai.

Once I get there I discover, with the Tourist Information's help, that no-one in Tutukaka is answering their phone. I punt and head for scenery instead, in the shape of Whangarei Falls. A wee bit of exploring around the bay leads me eventually to Tutukaka, where I discover the Tutukaka Holiday Camp open for business.

I also discover the pub, and dine on lamb burger and beer.
